From the moment Scott and I crossed the bridge in our van, Wally, it felt like we'd driven straight into a fantasy world – a real-life Lord of the Rings unfolding right before our eyes. As part of our ongoing Scotland van life adventure, Skye wasn't just another stop; it was destined to be a highlight, a place that would challenge and change us.

Eilean Donan Castle

Before even reaching Skye, our route took us past the iconic Eilean Donan Castle, perched perfectly on its little island where three lochs meet. Naturally, I was thrilled at the prospect of exploring another castle! This one looked so medieval and enigmatic, like a fortress plucked straight from another era (which, of course, it literally was). . What a perfect way to begin the day! Still, we couldn't linger too long; Skye was calling!

Driving Through Middle-earth

Crossing the Skye Bridge felt like passing through a portal. The landscapes immediately became wilder, more dramatic. Jagged peaks touched the sky, moody clouds swept across vast green and brown valleys, and waterfalls tumbled down cliffs towards the sea. Driving Wally through this scenery was breathtaking; every turn revealed a view more epic than the last. It felt unreal, and both Scott and I were stunned by the fact that people actually lived here, in this place that almost felt like a different realm. We took our time, stopping frequently just to soak it all in, and then enjoyed a wander through the colourful and charming seaside town of Portree.

The Majestic Challenge: Hiking the Old Man of Storr

The landmark that truly calls to visitors on Skye is the Old Man of Storr. This incredible rock pinnacle rises sharply towards the sky, visible for miles around the island. Seeing it up close was awe-inspiring, but hiking it? That was another story, especially for someone like me with a significant fear of heights.

Honestly, just looking up at the steep path made my hands sweat. But I hadn't come all the way to Skye just to let my fears conquer me. We began the ascent, and while it started gently enough, each upward step became more demanding, both physically and mentally.

To be honest, there were moments where I truly felt like I had reached my limit, when my fear of heights had gotten the best of me and vertigo had kicked in. I pleaded with Scott to turn back. Scott, however, with his incredible encouragement, wouldn't let me surrender. And wow, was I glad he did. As we climbed higher, the views unfolded with an exponentially breathtaking beauty. The world opened up around us – the islands, the sea, the dramatic Trotternish ridge.

Finally reaching the top of Old Man felt like a big victory, a wave of pure joy and accomplishment flooding through me after the challenging climb. What made it feel even more special was being greeted by a big raven, calmly patrolling the cliff's edge. We'd watched it circling high above during our climb, and seeing it there now felt strangely intentional, almost as if it had guided us up here and had waited to acknowledge our arrival. It felt almost spiritual, like a greeting from the spirit of Skye itself. It was a moment of pure connection, a reminder of the profound power and mystery held within nature. Facing my fear felt completely worth it for that feeling, for that view, for that raven and of course for myself and Scott too. To think that we could have missed out on this...

Sunset Hues and Inspired Strokes

That evening, Skye gifted us one more piece of magic: a coastal sunset that set the sky on fire. Hues of orange, pink, and gold painted the clouds and reflected on the water – a perfect, peaceful end to an extraordinary day. The raw, untamed beauty of the island, especially the stark majesty of the Old Man of Storr with that raven soaring in my memory, left an indelible mark.

Later, I felt compelled to capture some of that feeling. Inspired by the dramatic shapes and the overwhelming sense of awe, so I got out my watercolours. The painting became my homage to Skye, an attempt to translate that profound connection onto paper.

Our time on the Isle of Skye was more than we could have ever dreamed. It pushed my boundaries, filled us with wonder, and connected us deeply to the raw power of the natural world. It truly felt like stepping into another realm, a place where magic feels undeniably real. Skye is more than just scenery; it's an experience that stays with you long after you've left.
